Week of 12/20/10

This week in class we will be building a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum with your table.  You will finish on Tuesday and start presenting to the class.  Each portion will be complete and each student will have a part in the creation of the spectrum.  These will be displayed in the case in the 6th grade hallway after Christmas break.  You will use the foldable we created last week on Thursday and Friday.

Week of Dec. 6-10

This week will be very busy as we wrap up chapter 1 and begin chapter 2.  This chapter is about sound so we will be experimenting with various sound activities.

Check out your grades because the end of the quarter is Dec. 22.

Week of Nov. 29 - Dec. 3

Thanks you so much for doing your experiments/demonstrations.  I had so much fun doing this with you.  Your knowledge was amazing and I believe you were very successful with your experiments.

Keep track of your new book.  You will keep this book until we are finished with it, which will be after the winter break.

Check out the sites from class.  They are a lot of fun to play with.

Week of Nov. 15-19

We are starting Bk K/2/1&2.  This section is on the states and changes of states of matter.  We will build another foldable, which replaces WKST and Key Terms pages.  We will have a lot of smart board activities and demonstrations. Most demonstration will take place Monday and Tuesday.

For the week of Nov. 22-23 - Some 6A Science students are presenting experiments/demonstrations in class on Monday and Tuesday.  You should have found a quick one to do on Friday in the computer lab.  These should be about elements, compounds, mixtures, solids, liquids, and gas.  A few of you are doing some on light or sound.  Even a few others are doing demonstrations on topics we have not covered, but they have  been approved.  No huge mess and it should be quick and easy.  You have to think through, explain, and be able to talk about, and answer questions to your demonstration. Put your ideas to practice. Do it at home to try it out first, if you can. Remember, they should be cheap, easy, little mess, and not dangerous.  Bring in materials Monday and be ready.  I can't wait to see and hear your demonstration.    Have fun with it!

Week of Nov. 8-12

This week we are going to be learning about changes in matter which includes section 3 of the book.  Remember that students do not have a book assigned to them during this unit, but can check one out before leaving for school.  Books should be returned the next day.

I have put a lot of grades in the grade book, so check out your grades and make sure they are OK.  It is up to you to prove me wrong when I give papers back.  Lab papers will be returned this week (the ones done on Friday, Nov. 5).  You have have the analyze and conclude complete, from the end of the lab paper.  We are doing another foldable, which replaces a worksheet or outline of the section.  These will be graded on Friday.

All make up labs should be complete by Friday.  You can come in before or after school to finish your lab.

Check out the active art from Wednesday in class.  The web code is cgp-1013. The link is at the top of the blog.

Week of Nov. 1-5

This week we are going to have fun learning about measurements through exploring mass, volume and density. We have changed books to the blue book called, "Chemical Building Blocks."  Students do not have assigned books but are able to check out a book if they need to for completing any work not finished in class.  These books need to come back the next day.

Students have been introduced to a fun site called Strange Matter Exhibit.  I have put a link on the Science Sites page from our 6A Blog Home page. Check it out!  They can crush stuff, transform stuff, and look closer into materials.  A lot of science information presented in a fun way.

At this point, there is a clicker quiz on these sections on Monday, Nov. 8. We will begin a new section on Tuesday, the 9th.

Week of October 25-29

We are beginning a new unit this week.  The books will be blue and called "Chemical Building Blocks."  There is a really exciting web site for this unit and you will have fun visiting it.  You will need a computer with sound in order to get the full effect of the site.  This will be linked on the science links page on the home page.

Monday we will be finishing up the presentation on the scientist and inventors.  Each student did a great job researching the scientist with the shoulder partner.  Their presentations were very well done on Thursday and I am sure Monday will be just as good.  Tuesday we will start the new unit and prepare for some lab fun.  I told you we switch subjects frequently.

Scientist and Inventor

Students are studying about a scientist or inventor during this unit.  We have researched using books, encyclopedias, and the internet.  Scoring guides were handed out on Friday, October 15.  They will also need 3 pictures for this project: one should be done by hand and the other two can be printed from the computer or cut from a magazine.  All 3 pictures can be done by hand if they choose.  These will not be scored for artistic ability, but rather to help them present with a visual that relates to the person they studied.  They are not to go and buy poster board, but some students said that they would have some from the project they are starting soon for Comm. Arts.  Students are presenting with a partner, but this is an individual project.  For their research, they have created a green pouch to hold their foldables that are used to plug their information into. They do not need to write a paper for this, but they are doing the research for the project.  I will score the rough draft on Monday, October 18th.

Lab Report Assigned September 24 and due October 4

Your child was assigned a project to do at home.  They have 10 days to complete this project.  On Tuesday, I will attach the paper to this site in order to have a copy at home in case they did not take it with them or lost it.They were given this copy on September 24 and it is due October 4. The paper has the lab report to fill out and is attached to the instruction paper and also the scoring guide.  It is worth a lot of points. Encourage them to take time to get it correct, because this will be a large part of their grade

* They are to fill out the front page with the experiment they want to do.  We have done this many times in class.
*They will need help with the actual experiment.  Most experiments take two people to do and observe.
*During and after the experiment, they will record their data in the data table provided on the back of paper.
* Graphing their data is next.  We have also done this in class and we will work together on Thursday and Friday in class if they are unable to figure this out on their own.
* The conclusion is the last part and they will answer the 4 statements on the paper.  If they complete this as suggested in the Scientific Method foldable that we did in class and follow sections on the lab paper, they will do well on this assignment.
Thanks for helping them out.  I hope you enjoy doing this with them as well as they enjoy doing it with you.  You are your child's first and best teacher and they learn a lot from you.  Thanks for taking part of their education.  It is a great investment of your time.

Science

  • This page will include our homework for the week and it will be posted each Monday.  If you happen to be absent, you may find out the class work that you missed.
  • I will include the link to the Prentice Hall site that we use during class to make it easier for you to view information we experienced in class.
  • Check out the fun science links that are located on the Science Links Page from the Blog Home Page. They are a lot of fun!
